Biography

Selected Biography Sources for PHS Students     Updated 9/2010

 

Books:

Search the library catalog using both last name, first name if known.  The call numbers should start with either 921(individual biographies) or 920 (group biograpies). These books are shelved along the wall behind the fiction books.

 

 

Databases:

  • Gale's Biography in Context  Login with the username and password on the back of your ID card. Results will include reference book articles, newspapers, magazines, academic journals, websites, audio resources and images.  Very thorough and all with MLA citations.
  • Ebsco's Biography Reference Center   Login with the username and password on the back of your ID card.  Results divided into Detailed Biographies, Concise Biographies and Related Articles.  Articles will have citation available (make sure to choose MLA) when downloading, printing or emailing.
  • Proquest's History Study Center  Login with the username and password on the back of your ID card. You can limit your results to Study Units, Historical Documents,Maps & Reference, Multimedia or Journals.  MLA citations available, click on "Cite this.
  • World Book Biography  Login with the username and password on the back of your ID card. Article will be brief, authored by an authority and will include an MLA citation at the bottom.
  • United Streaming - Encyclopedia, Videos, images, clipart, sound effects for presentations. MLA citations. Username: phs.lrc Password: phs.lrc 

 

Internet Resources:

  • s9 Biographical Dictionary.  Wikipedia type. Chronological listing of life events.  Quotes. Pictures.
  • Biography.com  Sponsored by A&E Television.  Includes citation and signed articles. Watch out for the popup ads.
  • SweetSearch Biographies A search engine of websites hand selected by teachers and librarians
  • Academy of Achievement  20th and 21st century achievers from the arts, business, public service, science and sports.  Articles include a biography, profile and interview. Citation assistance.
  • Who2  Brief biographies but include 4 web links for further information. Lets you look up who was born on your birthday or place of birth.
  • Internet Public Library's Biography Resources  Links to many more reliable biography resources.
