Civil Rights Resume

ble of Contents:

EBSCO Discovery

Searches our catalog and most of the databases all at once.  Saves citations to Noodletools.  Make sure you have a Noodletools project set up before you start.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias are great places to start  your research.  World Book Online is an authoritative source that you can use as an entry point for your research.  World Book Advanced features links to primary sources as well as evaluated websites.  Click on the link to access and then type the login and password listed on the back of your PHS id card.

Encyclopedia Britannica is a state trial this year.  Login with username = csl2018 and password = preview.

Books

Search the library catalog using the leader's last name, also try keywords for groups or incidents the leader is noted for involvement in like "black panthers", "little rock".

Databases

Proquest

Proquest's History Study Center and SIRS Decades are excellent history resources but are not covered by the EBSCO Discovery search.

Login to them using the username and password on the back of your ID card.

In  SIRS Decades  I found biographies and some primary source material for the following people: Ali, Angelou, Anthony, Baldwin, Banks, Bond, Bunche, Carmichael, Chavez, Chisholm, Farmer, Friedan, Hamer, Jackson, Jordan, Kennedy, King, Lewis, Marshall, Meredith, Morrision, Newton, Parks, Randolph, Robinson, Seale, Stanton, Steinem, Walker, Warren, Malcolm X, Young.

ABC-CLIO

Includes American Government, American History, Daily Life Through History, Issues, Modern Genocide, African American Experience, American Indian Experience, Latino American Experience, World at War. and Modern World History .  Search the databases one at a time or all at once.   Citation information available for articles.

EBSCO

Start with the Biography Reference Center.  Other options include the History Reference Center or EBSCOhost (a way of searching multiple databases at one time, but does not include the Biography or the History Reference Centers).  All provide citations.

FactCite

FactCite has three databases that might help with this assignment: Biography for Beginners, American History and Defining Moments in U.S. History (this one contains many primary sources).  All resources are easy to read and contain MLA citations.  There is a search box at the top of the page that allows you to search all databases at once.

Gale

Start with Biography in Context.  Then if you  still need more information try Powersearching.

Powersearching allows you to do a cross-search 5 databases at once. Narrow down your results by looking at the Subject headings or doing an Advanced Search with boolean logic.  For all but 4 of the civil rights leaders, using just one database the Gale Virtual Reference Library will bring up biographical information.

For Beals, Green, Reagon, and Williams the cross-search of all 5 databases (and Biography in Context ) is the best way to get information.  Make sure you check all 5 cross-searchable databases then instead of typing a search hit enter.  Once in the powersearch screen, go to the Advanced Search.  For Beals or Green, search Little Rock, Arkansas as the subject and on the next line type either Beals or Green using the boolean operator and to combine the two lines.  Search "Bernice Johnson Reagon" in quotes as a keyword search.  Search "Williams, Juan" as a subject search and then narrow your results by looking at the document types in the left side bar.  Try interview or biography.

If this is all too confusing :( please, please ask one of the library staff for assistance or email us a powayhslibrary@gmail.com.

Internet Resources

Need some evaluated web resources try Sweet Search, if you don't find what you want they have a option to google as well.
