Getting Started:

 

  • Select high quality resources. Evaluate all for authority, accuracy, audience/agenda, and currency.
  • When using the databases or catalogs try to determine the subject headings (librarians' keywords) assigned to the topic.

Books:

 

  • Look for books in Destiny (library catalog) Once there do a search or try the Labor Strikes public list. Books will remain on the cart in the library until the assignment is complete.

  • While in the Catalog, try Webpath express to find some educator evaluated websites about your topic.

 

Databases:

  • (login using the username and password on the back of your ID card (unless otherwise noted)

  • Databases with Book information are highlighted in yellow.

  • PowerSearch- Try Powersearching with the keyword labor strikes. 
  • Limit your search to full text

  • Click on Books tab.

 
  • Browse Subjects (along orange bar under Power search header) related to  Strikes.

  • Examine the related terms and subdivisions.

  • Note the number of results (documents in each).

  • When you click on a term, the results will be displayed. Click on the Books tab for books.

 
  • Do an Advanced Search under the Power search header on the orange bar
  • Use boolean operator, And, Or, Not to combine search terms.
  • * is a truncation symbol that allows for multiple word endings, agricultur* will yield results with agriculture, agriculture's, and agricultural.
  • When you click on Search, your results will be displayed.  Click on the Books tab for books.
 

Proquest 

Remember to click on the orange My Products bar after entring the login and password. 

 

History Study Center

  • Search with one or two keywords
  • Largest amount of information in the Study Units
  • Reference and Biographies are books

 


Sirs Decades

  • Search using a few keywords
  • Access book results by clicking on the Reference tab

 

 

Historical Newspapers

  • No books
  • Excellent primary source newspaper articles.
 

Salem History   

  • All the information in this database comes from book resources we have in our library.

 

 

CQ Researcher 


Has a thorough article on labor unions' future with a chronology and background section. Not a book.

 

 

Discovery Education 

  • Videos and images about the labor strikes and unions.
  • Username: phs.lrc Password: phs.lrc
  • No books but encyclopedia articles.
